Learning to swim as an adult provides a wide range of benefits that extend way beyond the pool. First and foremost, it is a vital life-saving skill, dramatically reducing the risk of drowning and increasing confidence around water for yourself and your friends/family.
In terms of fitness, swimming is a wonderful, low-impact full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, builds muscle mass and is very easy on the joints, making it ideal for lifelong physical activity.
Also, the rhythmic nature of swimming can be incredibly stress-relieving and meditative, offering many mental health benefits that boosts mood and promotes overall well-being. Swimming literally adds years to your life and adds life to your years!
-
Absolutely not! It is NEVER EVER too late to learn to swim, regardless of your age or any previous experience. In fact, many adults find they pick up the skill relatively quickly because you come to us with a higher level of focus, motivation, and an understanding of different types of instruction that children may lack.
At our swim school, we specialise in teaching adults and our instructors are patient, empathetic, and trained to work through any fears or anxieties you may have; we are also AWESOME coaches! We start with the basics of water confidence and breath control before moving on to learning strokes, ensuring a safe, supportive, and successful learning journey.

It's different for everyone - like asking "how long is a piece of string?". Some people pick it up in half an hour, others might need 30 lessons. It all depends on your experience, confidence, consistency, and comfort in the water.
We wouldn't pretend to know exactly how long it'll take until we've seen you in action. After a lesson or two, your coach can give you a much clearer idea based on how you're progressing.
The most important thing? That you show up, enjoy the process, and trust that DMT Swimming will be right there with you, every splash of the way!

Arrive a few minutes early to get familiar with the centre, and find the changing rooms. Your name will be at reception - just let them know you're here for a lesson with DMT Swimming.
You'll need a padlock for the lockers, and while the centre rents-out towels, we highly recommend bringing your own. Don't forget your swimwear (costume or trunks) and goggles - though we do have spare googles if you need them! We'll provide all the equipment you'll use during the lesson, like floats, fins, nose clips, and more.
Before your first session, we'll also need an emergency contact and a quick note of any medical conditions or injuries we should be aware of.
Other than that - just show up ready to have a fantastic time in the water. We can't wait to welcome you!

To ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable lesson, there are a few key items to pack. The absolute essentials are proper swimwear (a well-fitting suit or trunks that allow for good movement) and a decent absorbent towel for drying off afterwards. We strongly recommend bringing goggles to protect your eyes from chlorine and help you see clearly underwater, which significantly boosts confidence, as well as a swim cap to keep long hair out of your face (we do have spare goggles and swim caps if you need them).
Finally, don't forget toiletries for a post-swim shower and a bag to keep your wet items separate. Bringing a reusable water bottle is also a great idea, as swimming is incredible exercise, staying hydrated is important and some people fail to realise you still sweat when you swim!

If you find that you are running late for your lesson (it's London, it happens!), then I would suggest contacting the leisure centre on (+44) 2077344325 and asking reception to inform your swimming coach of the situation. If you cannot get through to the centre then you can either call/text/email us, and we will do our best to inform your coach that you are running late to your session.
Whether your coach is able to extend your lesson, due to being late, is completely down to the circumstances on the actual day. Reasons and decisions for this can range from other lessons taking place, to the pool closing times.
-
Yes! We have plenty of spare goggles and swim caps for you to use throughout your lesson. It is advisable to purchase your own, of course, especially if you plan on practicing between lessons. Basically, as long as you bring yourself, your swim wear and a towel; then everything else you will need for your lesson is right here, waiting for you!
-
Absolutely! Our priority is making sure you feel as comfortable as possible, so if you or your child needs a coach in the water, we are happy to do that.
However, our main goal is to help the learner build confidence and independence so they can swim effectively with the coach providing instruction and support from the poolside. We'll work at your pace until you're ready!
-
Yes, of course. We strongly encourage it if you feel the need. Sometimes, getting a fresh pair of eyes can do wonders for a swimmer's progression, as different coaches offer unique perspectives and teaching styles. It's incredibly important that you feel comfortable and 'gel' with your coach.
The beautiful thing about the DMT Swimming booking system is that you are in control! You get to choose your preferred day, time, and coach for every session.

All of our DMT coaches are fully qualified to the national standard and hold comprehensive insurance. We take compliance and safety very seriously.
Beyond the formal qualifications, we prioritise a culture of continuous improvement:
• Continuing Professional Development (CPD); Our coaches regularly communicate with one another to discuss client progress and share ideas.
• Team Support; We believe that by supporting each other and exchanging different points of view, we grow as teachers and consistently become better at what we do!
-
Generally, swimming is a low-impact activity that often helps with rehabilitation and can even resolve problems, rather than cause them. However, your ability to learn will certainly depend on the specific nature of your injury.
Our advice is always to:
• Talk to Us First; Please discuss your injury with us before booking, and we can look at the situation and tailor your lessons together.
• Seek Medical Advice; We strongly encourage you to get an opinion from your doctor or physical therapist before starting lessons to ensure we proceed in the safest and most beneficial way possible.
-
While all of our coaching sessions are primarily conducted in English, we do have coaches on the team who are fluent in other languages. Coach Magda is Polish and Coach Francesca is Italian.
This means that lessons may occasionally be available in Polish or Italian, but this is entirely dependent on the specific coach's availability and scheduling.
Rest assured, all of our coaches, regardless of their native language, have excellent English skills, ensuring clear and effective communication throughout your lessons.

The pool at Marshall Street Leisure Centre is an impressive (almost) 33 metres long! It starts at 0.9 metres and reaches a depth of 3 metres at the deep-end.
Don't worry though - we teach in our own dedicated lane, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment. Plus, our amazing lifeguard team is always on-hand, and your safety is our top priority.
-
Not at all! You don't need a leisure centre membership to enjoy sessions with DMT Swimming - just let reception know you're here for your lesson or class, and your name will be on the list. Easy!
However, if you'd like to use the gym, spa, or pool outside of lesson times, you'll need a separate membership. The leisure centre's friendly sales team can help with that - feel free to mention we sent you!
-
If you're a confident, independent swimmer (able to swim in deep water without support and away from the wall), we're more than happy for you to stay a little after your lesson to practise – just be mindful not to over-stay, as the pool is shared with other users.
If it's not your lesson day and you'd like to come in for extra practice, you'll need to purchase a swim ticket at reception or have a leisure centre membership. Feel free to ask us if you need help or a referral - we're happy to guide you!
